Fire Department
When McComb incorporated in 1872, it was served by an all volunteer fire department. In 1904, fire destroyed two-thirds of the downtown district, including city hall. The fire department was restructured in 1915 and became a paid department. "The McComb Fire Department is a very efficient organization and it does effective work in fighting fires. McComb people are well protected against the hazard of fire," reported the McComb City Enterprise. In May of 1928, a new station opened that included 8 single beds, 2 fire poles and full bathrooms inside. It made for the most attractive firehouse of its kind in Mississippi.The McComb Fire Department is proud to give you a glimpse into our lives through this site. We employ 39 full time firefighters who work 24 hour shifts in addition to the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief, as well as one full-time Homeland Security Official. We have 4 stations housing, a ladder truck, several pumpers, a tanker, and a rescue truck. We are striving to gain more equipment as the need arises. Our firefighters are striving to be the highest trained department in the state.
A hazardous materials team (known as HazMat) has been established in cooperation with Pike County. The HazMat team will respond within Pike County to control dangerous situations involving chemical spills and hazardous materials. The fire department also has a dive rescue team to assist in rescue operations throughout the region's waterways. The Mississippi Office of Homeland Security's Task Force Four is also based in McComb. This is the Logistics Section of the 'all-hazards response' statewide task force.
